So, what is Cloud Computing?

Just what is Cloud Computing; the latest trendy buzz phrase or a real leap forward in sustainable, scalable IT solutions? You've probably seen the term used around the internet and in business news reports but what does it mean and how can it benefit you?

In simple terms, probably the best definition is that Cloud Computing will provide scalable IT solutions offered as a service over the Internet to multiple users, known as Software as a Service (SaaS). By far the greatest benefits Cloud Computing brings are around reducing costs and improving computing efficiency. During the past 12 months we have seen a great deal of interest in Cloud options within the contact centre sector and there are many business factors influencing this interest. Most notably is the challenging economic environment which has affected just about all businesses in every industry and the pinch is now being well and truly felt in the public sector.

A Cloud service has three distinct characteristics that differentiate it from traditional hosting:

  1. It is sold on demand;
  2. It is scalable, so the user can have as much or as little of a service as they want at any given time and;
  3. The service is fully managed by the provider.

Lower cost
Constant economic pressure to manage costs on a greater scale is forcing companies to consider how Cloud solutions can offer a new way to provide cost effective IT solutions.  A hybrid approach to Cloud Computing may be a feasible halfway house to realising past IT expenditure without having to transfer all current technology over to the Cloud in one major leap. Many of our new Cloud customers have combined mplSystems' cloud based solution, Aurora, with their existing applications and infrastructure. And by drawing on parent company, Message Pad's, People On Demand service, these companies have achieved IT cost savings, flexibility and the ability to bring new ideas to market rapidly and effectively.

Green computing
Whilst the economy may be the main driver behind Cloud Computing, it is also considered to be a forward-thinking, environmentally sensitive approach; it promotes sustainability and has a much smaller carbon footprint by limiting duplicated efforts and utilising computing power more efficiently.
